I’ve personally found this plugin to be one of the most widely respected and used plugins in the WordPress Community. Disappointingly the standard WordPress SEO features aren’t quite up to scratch, and this plugin does a great job at filling those gaps.. IF USED CORRECTLY! In this tutorial I’m going to cover the basic steps any All in One SEO plugin user should take to ensure maximum exposure in those all important Search Engine Results. It must be made clear though that this plugin won’t automatically get you listed in a Search Engine – the [...]
These days everything comes with comprehensive instructions. Whether it’s a TV, a Fridge or a car, you’ll get a book full of detailed instructions in 10 different languages. When it comes to Web Design though – this is not the case. Unfortunately you can’t go to the shops and buy ‘Web Design’ with a full set of instructions on how to use it. It’s something that is learned on the job, through peers and through hours of research, trial and error. When developing software applications, there are usability heuristics which have become standard. I’ve been [...]
It seem only right that I dedicate the first ‘HACKPROJECT Weekly Favourite Sites’ to the blogs that have given me a ton of inspiration over the past year, as without these blogs I wouldn’t even be here writing this post. I’d recommend anyone thats looking to start a blog, or even experienced blog owners head over and take a look at them all – I guarantee you’ll come away with something. www.line25.com “Line25 is the drawing board of creative web design, a place where ideas and inspiration are drafted out into articles, tutorials and [...]
WordPress doesn’t give a way of adding extra pages to the main navigation bar within the Dashboard. The reason for this? Well the pages added to a navigation bar are pulled using the function dp_list_pages() (within the functions.php file). This function pulls any pages you’ve created within the page section of the WordPress dashboard. So what if you want to add an extra menu item to direct visitors to a page that lists all posts of a certain category? Or if you wish to have a link to another website (perhaps a portfolio?!) displayed within [...]
After my last post about the Google Search Engine, and being that this blog is relatively new, I’ve decided to bring the tone down slightly and post something a little less serious… If Apple did Search Engines: The Apple Search Engine wouldn’t be called ‘Apple’ or ‘Search’, but a very witty ‘iSearch”. Apple wouldn’t use industry standard Search Engine code, but would instead write their own iSearch OSX that would only run on the Safari browser. Shortly before the release of iSearch, an Apple employee would ‘accidently’ leave a concept iSearch in a [...]
The Google search engine is great at returning accurate and up to the minute results for any search term. BUT what if you need more? What if you’re looking for more out of Google than just a list of websites containing the search terms you typed in? Well read on and learn some additions to your search terms that you can use to give a much more accurate results. site: If you’re searching for a topic that you remember seeing on a certain site, use this trick and get google to do the searching for [...]
My daily life as an IT engineer means I’m constantly subject to terrible user passwords! I’m not going to go into too many examples – but ‘123456’ and ‘password1’ were but a few of the greats. To give users an idea of the strength of their passwords, I decided to put together a quick reference guide showing the amount of guesses it would take to crack. The response was surprisingly good, with users actually appreciating a ‘layman’ explanation for why their passwords were so poor! Although this may not be such a problem for a home [...]
I recently came across a problem where i’d moved my Playstation 3 between 2 different tv’s.. getting a message saying ‘mode not supported’ on the second tv. The problem occurred because the first tv supported full HD (1080p), whereas the second only supported 1080i. Luckily, there’s a simple solution to switch the playstation back to its default video settings, without having to plug it back into the first tv! Ensure the playstation is plugged into the mains and the rear switch turned on, BUT the console is in standby. Hold down the power button for [...]
